CNN —The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed last week and – as they so often do – caused quite a stir. Co-written and directed by Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall” is nominated for five Oscars this year in total, including for best original screenplay and best picture. That gives Williams more Academy Award nominations than any other living person. According to the Academy, the late Walt Disney holds the overall record of career nominations, with a grand total of 59. Still, it seemed to be a role destined for Brooks, who received a Tony Award nomination in 2016 for playing the same character in the Broadway revival of the musical.

An artist's concept of the dwarf planet Eris and its moon Dysnomia is seen in this undated illustration released by NASA. Most likely there is no liquid ocean inside Eris," Nimmo added. Eris has a diameter of about 1,445 miles (2,326 km), slightly smaller than Pluto's 1,473 miles (2,370 km). Because of its greater concentration of rock, which is denser than ice, Eris has about 25% more mass than Pluto. "Just like the Earth-moon system, tides on Eris slowly push Dysnomia away and slow down the spin of Eris.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in the NFL on Thursday, agreeing to a five-year, $275 million contract extension, according to a person familiar with the deal. The market for quarterbacks was set for Burrow in late July when Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million extension. Herbert’s total value and $52.5 million average per season surpassed the $260 million, five-year extension ($52 million average) that Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson signed in April. Deshaun Watson agreed to a fully guaranteed $230 million deal with Cleveland in 2022. Bengals owner Mike Brown said a year ago that the team had begun restructuring finances in order secure a long-term deal for Burrow.

Union members told Insider they are not too concerned about Biden's age or electability. "I never heard someone who is Catholic say the pope is too old," one union member said. Biden's path to reelection depends in part on touting those achievements and turning out union members in November 2024. "There are a lot of politicians in this country who can't say the word 'union,'" Biden said Saturday afternoon, supporters in colorful union merchandise cheering behind him. At Saturday's rally, however, union members insisted it is not a concern — and that the discourse around it is an indictment of the times.

Jan 3 (Reuters) - The family of Damar Hamlin said on Tuesday they were moved by the support shown to the Buffalo Bills safety after he suffered a cardiac arrest and would release updates on his condition as soon as they have any. "On behalf of our family, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to Damar during this challenging time," Hamlin's family wrote in a statement. During the first quarter of Monday's game against the host Cincinnati Bengals, the 24-year-old Hamlin got to his feet after making a tackle and then collapsed. The family also acknowledged the first responders and healthcare professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who provided care to Hamlin as well as the Bengals and Bills organizations. "Our union's focus remains on the health of our brother, Damar Hamlin," the NFL Players Association said in a statement.

A Sacramento Kings win always ends the same way, with 1,000 watts of RGB lasers converging in a purple column. Installed at the Golden 1 Center before the season, the light shines up from the roof and dissipates somewhere past the Northern California stratosphere. The hope is that every Sacramento resident can see it—along with whatever extraterrestrials are passing by, Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé has joked. Less predictable but equally resplendent, for the “Beam Team,” are the scoring displays that occasion the postgame spectacles. “We played pretty good offensively,” first-year Kings coach Mike Brown said in a room-for-improvement tone after his club heaped 137 points atop the Detroit Pistons in a recent victory.

If lava does cross the highway, the Hawaii National Guard can help plan for alternatives and try to set up bypass routes, the governor said. Cars wait in traffic along Saddle Road, with occupants waiting to view the Mauna Loa volcano on Thursday. Mauna Loa, which means “Long Mountain,” covers half the island, according to the USGS. It is one of six volcanoes in Hawaii, according to the agency.
CNN —The Brooklyn Nets have made a terrible start to the NBA season and on Saturday star forward Yuta Watanabe didn’t make matters any easier by comically scoring in the opposite team’s basket. At the Barclays Centre, the Nets went down 125-116 to the Indiana Pacers to go 1-5 for the season. It was the Nets’ fourth straight loss and one coach Steve Nash called a “disaster.”The night started ominously when, in the first quarter, Watanabe accidentally scored for the Pacers. The comical two-pointer cut the Nets’ lead before the Pacers tied at the end of the first quarter. As the Pacers pulled away from the struggling Nets, rookie Bennedict Mathurin scored a career-high 32 points in a team record 23 three-pointers.

The company expects to contribute $885 million in gross economic output for Cameron County, Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez said on Thursday at the "State of the City" event, per the outlet.
